Personal
Overview:
Raised
on a diet of American film and television, the German born
director begged his mother for a super 8 camera and began
making action adventure films at the age of 12. Casting his
school buddies, Pfitzner created knock-offs of his favorite
American classics. NEVADA JACK AND THE RIDDLE OF THE MAGIC
STONE, THE DAMMED, VICTIM and HARD HISTORY, were all rooted
in homage to American filmmakers. More often than not, the
tribute was to Pfitzner's most revered role model, Steven
Spielberg. As a teenager, Pfitzner's ability to write stories,
develop characters and create conflicts grew and his natural
born talent to tell stories visually, began to emerge. His
fairy tale SLEEPING DREAM, sci-fi STIGMA, teen comedy SATURDAY
NIGHT COMMUNICATION, and the love story MY FAVORITE THING,
all garnered Pfitzner first place awards and accolades at
film festivals throughout Germany.
At the age of eighteen Pfitzner made his first 35mm film,
CARGO FROM CAIRO. The film was a theatrical hit in Germany
where it was picked up by Canal plus for broadcast on the
Premiere Channel in Germany and France and later made its
debut in the U.S. on the Showtime Network. Shortly after graduation,
Pfitzner relocated to Southern California moved into an apartment
in Hollywood and enrolled in the UCLA Extension Film Program.
He was selected to direct a short film but unfortunately the
script he was assigned did not make the final cut. Still,
Pfitzner persisted and convinced the instructor's that he
had a better script. Pfitzner was given 24 hours to produce
story boards and get project approval. In less than 24 hours
Pfitzner was given the green light and pre-production began
on the film noir thriller "LAST CALL". At the film's industry
screening at 20TH CENTURY FOX STUDIOS, Pfitzners talent caught
the attention of United Productions, Inc. executives who signed
him to a first look deal. Pfitzner went on to create, write
and direct the "CYBERKIDZ" pilot, a children's action adventure
series which went on to get a 26 episode commitment for syndication
in 1996-97.
The past two years Robert Pfitzner has been busy directing
music videos and writing. He has several screenplays available
for theatrical production. His most recent a psycological-thriller
"The Greenhouse", is creating a strong buzz in the industry.
Other works include the action-thriller "WHISPERING SANDS"
and the high concept adventure "WEBLINERS". Pfitzner is also
developing an animated television series called "Ozzie and
Quark".
Robert Pfitzner is an action director, a visual artist, and
story teller and only time will tell if his favorite techniques,
images, stories, and performers - offers a unique opportunity
to study the interaction of personal, social, historical,
and formal causes in the creation of art. To understand the
role of the director becomes the first step towards an examination
of the relative contributions of the scriptwriter, the cameraman,
and the producer. Only the actor or actress has the same kind
of continuity from film to film as the director.
